We had another nice Christmas
Tree-Cycling promotion radio promotion this morning on Star

We had a nice call in promotion on the Phil Show for the
Christmas Tree-Cycling. We got
to cover most of the issues such as the pros and cons of live trees vs.
fake trees, the need to bring yard waste and other organics to a
designated recycling/composting center (such as the Knox County
Greenwaste Facility) instead of putting them in the landfill and
that open burning is becoming more restricted and will likely be banned
in the future. Tree-Cycling is set for January 6th.

The Real Yellow Pages from Bell South and Keep
America Beautiful have entered into a partnership to increase phone
book recycling. In order to help the effort the Knoxville Zoo
will offer a ticket discount to anyone who recycles a phone book at the
Zoo during January 2007.

This was the really big day. Was it because of the great
accomplishments being recognized at the national awards luncheon?
NOOOOOOOOO! It was because Elvis visited. The KAB
mid-year forum will be held in Memphis in August 2007 and Elvis
(no, really) and members of the Tennessee delegation passed out
information to the group. Below Elvis and the Tennessee
delegates are waiting in the wings to enter the arena.

A little later we did have the national awards luncheon with lots of
winners from Tennessee. Keep Knoxville Beautiful picked up
the Distinguished Service Citation (3rd best in the nation) for
affiliates serving a population of 200,000 or more. Below:
Shawn Bible picking up a national award for TDOT's highway
beautification programs, Edith Heller receiving several awards
for Keep Tennessee Beautiful and Mary Lee picking up a
First Place affiliate award for Keep Kingsport Beautiful.
The big surprise was for Judge Larry Potter of Memphis
receiving the Iron Eyes Cody Award for his work on the bench as
an Environmental Judge and for promoting environmental courts across the
nation. He has also been a tireless advisor to other judges and
law enforcement officials on the value of prosecuting environmental
cases.
Congratulations to Judge Potter.

Today there we a number of sessions covering recycling, cigarette
litter, phone book recycling, promoting consistent national marketing of
recycling terms, practices and symbols and more. Pictured below
center are our state leaders: Shawn Bible of the TDOT Highway
Beautification Department and Edith Heller, Executive
Director of Keep Tennessee Beautiful.

Thursday evening the whole Tennessee delegation went out to
eat at a really eclectic restaurant that featured belly dancers who
twirled flaming batons. After making sure we knew the location of
the nearest exit we all enjoyed the show. There were no serious
injuries. We were disappointed that the Space Shuttle
launch was cancelled due to low clouds. It would have been the
first night launch in years and is quite visible from the Orlando
area.

The conference sessions started today.

The most interesting presentation (to me) covered the earnings of
companies listed on the
Dow Sustainability Index. These companies are apparently
outperforming the Dow Industrial Index on earnings. There are a
lot of variables to look at but it certainly encourages investors and
companies to look at their sustainability goals.

It's time for the Keep America Beautiful National Conference.
Joyce and I traveled to Orlando today for the KAB
conference that starts tomorrow. We got here around 9 a.m. and
spend the day at Sea World. Sea World is a conference
sponsor and we are having a reception there on Wednesday. Today we
got to see Shamu and the other killer whales do their show.
It was really neat. Here are some pictures of Shamu and other Sea
World exhibits:
