I just had to share this picture. Richard Mathews, a long-time friend of KKB, dog owner, and member of Ducks Unlimited sent this picture. Richard takes his dog fishing and when the dog sees floating litter he jumps in the water and brings it to the boat. We really like this dog.

I got a call today from Sam Darden of the UT Christian Student Fellowship. He's been doing campus ministry for 30 years. He started at UT in '73 and I got my BS in '74, so we overlapped just a little. His students have been doing campus cleanups in the Lake/Terrace Avenue area and are willing to get involved in an adopt-a-spot program. In November, a number of groups on campus are going to get together to plan just such a project. We will involve Sam in the process. We are also going to give his group some work gloves and "loan" them a couple of litter picker devices.

In honor of Halloween, our office was haunted by the actual presence of Mike Schoenberger our former intern. He dropped by to brief our new intern Annie Morton on the current status of the Friends of Fort Sanders. Friends of Fort Sanders is going to be revived with the help of S.P.E.A.K., Dr. McKinney, Sara Surak, SGA, TeamVols, Randall DeFord and others in the UT/Fort Sanders community.

It's been an interesting day. Bob Santore dropped by to give me an update on the South Knox Beautification Committee work. They are doing a great job. They had a super bulb sale a few weeks ago and have raised enough money to buy several thousand daffodil bulbs for a median planting on the James White Parkway extension. We also got a call about the North Neighbors Section of the News Sentinel. The Halls Tribute Trees are famous! Mike Blankenship is a great guy, isn't he!

More trees... This afternoon Abby and I met with Max Alvarez of Fountain City Lions Club. We did an assessment of our Living Tribute Trees in Fountain City Park. We are planning three new trees, 3-4 replacement trees and several replacement markers. At this time most of the work will be targeted for the week before Thanksgiving week. The families of new trees will be notified of the planting times. Earlier I had met with John Evans and we had a discussion about the Haslam Transition Team. John offered me any help I needed.

And now for something completely different... Welcome to KKB's blog. We just had our best Orchids & Onions Awards program in recent years, the Halls Tribute Trees project was a gigantic success, Keep America Beautiful notified us we will be receiving 3 national awards at their 50th Anniversary national conference in December and we just received a state award from the Tennessee Recycling Coalition. We are very proud to announce we have been asked to work on one of Mayor-elect Bill Haslam's working groups that will assist his transition team. The Neighborhood Working Group will evaluate the function and efficiency of city services. Members are Tom Salter (me), Connie Loy of Oakwood-Lincoln Park, Matt Edens of Parkridge, Doug Allen of Island Home, Tina Rosling of Fourth & Gill, Joe Fuhr of West Hills and Margaret Gaiter of Beck Cultural Center. I will be using this blog to post my impressions of the work of this group.
