Keep Knoxville Beautiful Thanks You...

We want to extend an invitation to all the families, groups, neighborhoods and companies to help pick up litter during the Great American Cleanup™.
Although the 2008 event is still in final planning stages, it is not to early to begin organizing a neighborhood cleanup.  A neighborhood cleanup or beautification project is the best way to immediately improve the quality of life in a community.  To join the Great American Cleanup™ in Knoxville or Knox County call 521-6957 or use this online registration form.  To join in another Tennessee county call 888-862-5326 or visit the Keep Tennessee Beautiful website.  To join in another state visit the Keep America Beautiful website.

Safety Tips for Great American Cleanup™ Events

All litter cleanup volunteers must read and understand these basic safety tips.  If you are a group leader please provide this information to members of your group:

  • Dress properly, wear heavy shoes and long pants, use sun screen and insect repellent when appropriate.

  • Drink plenty of fluids, don't let your volunteers overdo it.

  • Don't overstuff bags; never pick up hypodermic needles or sharp objects.

  • When working near a road, wear safety vests, work in groups, someone in your group should watch for approaching vehicles.

  • Wash hands after the cleanup.

  • Bag litter to meet local regulations.

  • Young children should not collect litter - contact Keep Knoxville Beautiful for alternative Great American Cleanup™ ideas for young children - check out the Great American Cleanup™ poster contest.

If you are planning to remove illegal signs from utility poles please follow these additional guidelines:

  • Never try to climb the pole. Stay on the ground and remove only the litter you can reach.

  • Wear gloves and eye protection.

  • Pick up and dispose of any nails and tacks removed. Don't leave them in the street.

  • Stay away from any wires that may be attached to or hanging from the pole.

  • Remove only the temporary advertising or litter signs. Do not disturb metal numbers, letters, equipment boxes, traffic signs, etc.

  • Report any dangerous condition to your utility company.

  • Report the number of signs removed to Keep Knoxville Beautiful.  Take a picture of your "pile of signs" for our website.
