What is the
I Spy on Litter program?

It is a safe, effective way for citizens help
send a litter prevention message to litterbugs.

Does anyone get in trouble or get put on a "list"?

No, we do NOT publish or reveal YOUR name to anyone.  The litterbug receives one informative letter from us and is NOT contacted again.  Litterbugs' names are NOT turned over to the police.

Additional questions?

If you have more questions about this program call the office or send us an email.

New Litterbug Reporting System

Keep Knoxville Beautiful has maintained a litterbug reporting hotline and web page for years.  Thousands of litterbugs have received "warning letters" from Keep Knoxville Beautiful about the harm of littering and potential fines.

The State of Tennessee now maintains a litter bug reporting phone number and website.  We are encouraging all of our watchful friends to use the new system.  Why?  The warning letters come from the the Tennessee Highway Patrol and we feel the litterbug will be "more impressed" with a letter from a State Trooper.

Due to restrictions, we no longer send letters from our Director. The state has taken over this program.

The hotline number is 877-8-LITTER.

Do warning letters to litterbugs make a difference?

1) It is a cost-effective way to get a serious message in the hands of the litterbug.  Compare the cost of producing a letter with expensive media campaigns the litterbug may never see or hear!

2) It provides a "safe" way for you to "confront" a litterbug.

3) People have called to apologize for littering after receiving a warning letter.

4) 25 to 30 letters a month come from the Knox County area.
