Orchids & Onions Nomination Form

2008 Orchids & Onions Nomination Form
  • The Orchid Award is given for good overall design, sensitivity to surroundings, and high standards of maintenance.

  • The Onion Award is given to a property that is in poor condition, could be considered an eyesore and has a significant negative impact on the surrounding properties in a commercial neighborhood.  Important:  We are looking for properties that could be turned around with a modest investment of money, material and time.  Larger scale eyesores and significant blighted areas may be submitted but will likely be referred to City and County Codes officials for follow up and may not actually be selected to win the Onion Award.

Past winners are not eligible to win again.  Please review the list of past winners if you are not sure a property has won in the past.  Private residences are not eligible to win. Winners will be announced at the next  Orchids & Onions awards banquet, Thursday, October 9, 2008 at The Foundry.   Entries may be submitted anytime, but should be received by Keep Knoxville Beautiful no later than September 15, 2008.  You may hand deliver nominations M-F between 9:00am and 4:30pm to 100 Gay Street, Suite 103 in The Emporium.   Nominations may be faxed to 865-521-7193.  You may also use the online form above to submit a nomination.  Property owners may submit their own properties.  You may nominate as many properties as you want. For information call 865-521-6957.

  • When you make a nomination you SHOULD assign the property to a geographic area of the community.
  • The Orchids & Onions Committee, made up of KKB board members will review all the nominations prior to judging.  Onion Award nominations deemed to be vindictive will not be judged and removed from the list of nominees.  The Committee will have the discretion to assign properties to a different geographic area if it could be perceived to be in another area.  This would only apply to those properties close to a "boundary".
  • Using an established set of criteria (see below), the Orchids & Onion judges will select two winners from each geographic area.  The judges will determine if the award is being made on the basis of the appearance of the structure, landscaping, etc.  Multi-dwelling units will be judged on all listed criteria.
  • Non-commercial properties (such as schools, churches, firehalls, etc.) will receive one award – nine will be given commercial properties.
  • Independent judges will determine nine of the ten Orchids, the Keep Knoxville Beautiful board of directors will select the tenth Orchid winner, the "people’s choice" award.
