Second Presbyterian Church

2829 Kingston Pike, Knoxville, Tennessee 37919

(865) 523-2189

Founded in 1818, the members of the Second Presbyterian Church were able to construct a modest facility the next year on a lot on Market Street. This building was inadequate by 1860 and was replaced with a larger building located on the same property. By 1905, yet another move was in order and the congregation purchased a lot on the corner of Church and Walnut Streets, where the Lawson-McGhee Library now stands. By the early 1950’s, there were some church members who wanted to relocate, since the Walnut Street location seemed to offer few possibilities for future expansion. The opportunity to do so arose when property became available on Kingston Pike. Although some of the members were initially reluctant, the decision was eventually made to relocate, and the first services were held in the present building in 1957.
