St. Johns Cathedral (Episcopal)
413 Cumberland Avenue, Knoxville, Tennessee 37902
(865) 525-7347
Although occasional services were held earlier, it was not until 1829, at the organization of the Diocese of Tennessee, that the name of St. Johns Episcopal Church appears in an official record. Despite this early representation, services for St. Johns Church were sporadic over the next several years. The first regular meetings were not held until 1844, when the members convened in a small building on the corner of Gay and Church Streets. Within two years, construction had begun on a new building, located on the corner of Cumberland Avenue and Walnut Street. The same location is the site of the present structure, which was started in 1890 and expanded through the years.
