Second United Methodist Church
1524 Western Avenue, Knoxville, Tennessee 37921
(865) 524-1689
After meeting in homes and later in a store building located two blocks from the present location on Western Avenue, the Second Methodist Church was formally organized and the first pastor appointed in 1868. Their building was near completion in 1873 when it was destroyed by fire. Despite this setback, the sanctuary was rebuilt and dedicated before the end of the same year. Additions and renovations to the original building in 1907 and again in 1922 had utilized as much space as was available on the original lot. This led to the purchase of adjacent property in 1951 which, together with the original property, meant that a new and larger building was possible. The result was the construction of the present building which was dedicated in 1958.
