Research

Although nearly 90 percent of all brain research is supported by NIMH (National Institute on Mental Health) [LINK TO NIMH], all levels of NAMI organizations- national, state, and local affiliates - and NAMI members are dedicated to increasing research into severe mental illness such as schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and depression, plus others that impact people of all ages.

NAMI is persuaded by current research that major mental illnesses are biochemical brain diseases which can affect anyone, and which are without known prevention or cure. Our goal is that educators and service providers will incorporate current research into mental illness practice.

NAMI at the national level directs the majority of its resources into research, because the strongest weapon against stigma toward mental illness is science. External contributions are also used for education and advocacy campaigns to ensure that people with chronic and potentially disabling brain disorders have equal access to quality health care, housing, education and economic opportunities.

Our local affiliate supports research through our membership dues, a percentage of which goes to NAMI Tennessee and another percentage to NAMI.
