Recent news stories show that Tennesseans overwhelmingly support smokefree air in restaurants and other public places. Smokefree environments have come to communities across the nation, including Lexington and Louisville in the neighboring tobacco state of Kentucky. Legislators in Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, and Louisiana have passed statewide bans on smoking in restaurants, showing more concern for their constituents than for the big tobacco industry which profits from their suffering and contributes to the rising cost of government-subsidized health care for the diseases caused by exposure to tobacco smoke.
News stories listed on this page focus primarily on Tennessee and surrounding states. In Tennessee, our legislators are letting us down by perpetuating a state law which actually prevents us from protecting our families from toxic tobacco smoke. Under TCA Section 39-17-1551, it is illegal for a city, town, or county in Tennessee to protect the rights of its citizens to breath smokefree air. That's as ludicrous as having a state law preventing the county health department from conducting hygiene inspections in restaurants.

The Reflector, Starkville, Mississippi, 29 August 2006One result of the no-smoking ordinance has been the return of older patrons to the bar.
"We definitely have seen a return of more people in the 30 to 50 age range," Wright said. "They now feel that hanging out in the bar can be fun again, especially without having to worry about any of the health concerns being around smoke comes with."
Down the street at Dave's Darkhorse Tavern, management indicated another sales increase.
"Food sales have gone way up," said Dave Alexander, one of Dave's managers.
"We've definitely seen an increase in the crowd coming up here. Dave's has always been a more diverse crowd, what with students as wells as professors being patrons."
Downtown at Big Daddy's, atmosphere and food sales are not the only things that have improved.
"I think behavior of people, not only patrons but also employees, has definitely improved," said Lorenzo Crawford, executive chef at Big Daddy's, said. "At first there were the initial complaints, but smokers don't really care if they just have to step outside for a minute."
Crawford also added that, because of the no-smoking ordinance, bars in Starkville have collectively become a better atmosphere.

Times Dispatch, Richmond, Virginia, 31 August 2006Butting Out: Some Staunton nightspots say no to smoking
The News Leader, Staunton, Virginia, 28 August 2006Two months after one popular Staunton eatery snuffed out smoking in its bar area, bartenders say sales are up, as a new crowd of non-smokers find the bar a friendlier place. Now, even a bowling alley has decided to follow suit with a smoking ban of its own.
The restaurants policy went into effect July 1. Since then, bartenders say a few regulars grumbled, but more newcomers have discovered the Depots bar. The bar...is boasting record sales, Smith said.
A lot of people started coming in because of it, bartender Brad Botkin said. Its a lot easier to clean, too. Stuff doesnt get so sticky.
But the Depot is not alone in quest for clean air. The Dining Room on Augusta Street opened with a no-smoking policy, and Staunton Bowling Lanes on Greenville Avenue is following suit.
This month, owner and ex-smoker P.J. Wright restricted smoking at the bowling alley in the daytime, which is the most popular time for families to visit, he said. Smokers are still welcome after 5:30 p.m. and at designated smoking areas.
I didnt think it was fair to kids to have to endure smoking when theyre trying to have fun, Wright said.
Some customers grumbled, he said, but most feedback has been positive. In fact, Wright said his daytime business increased this month....Smokers encounter an erosion of tolerance
