Lantern & Carriage Tour
From 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. on Sunday, September 28, 2008, Old Gray Cemetery will hold its annual Lantern and Carriage Tour, including carriage rides, refreshments, and re-enactors sharing tales about the lives of several of the cemetery's permanent residents. From ministers to soldiers to society belles, their experiences were nothing like you might expect. For an entertaining evening filled with stories of war, violence, kidnapping, and even one raging love affair, contact Old Gray Cemetery, 543 North Broadway, at (865)522-1424 for further information.
Sesquicentennial Celebration
In June of 2000 Old Gray Cemetery
was 150 years old. Festivities were planned in honor of the occasion
and over 200 people were here to celebrate on a hot, humid Sunday
summer evening. Horse and buggy rides, Civil War reenactors, a small
brass band, and people in Victorian costume added to the feeling of a
time long ago. Descendants of those buried at Old Gray came from as
far away as Colorado to attend.
The Lantern & Carriage Tour is held
each year on the last Sunday in September. Join reenactors to understand
the history of Knoxville.
During the Dogwood Arts Festival each
Spring, The Hunt For History is presented by eighth grade students
at The Episcopal School of Knoxville on the grounds of the Cemetery.
Other Events
All through the year Old Gray
Cemetery is the site of various memorial events, school tours, Civil
War commemorations and garden tours. If you would like to hold a
special event or tour for your organization or school please call our
office to make arrangements at (865)522-1424.
Cross-stitch Kit of Old Gray Gates
The Knoxville Tennessee Chapter
of The Embroiderers' Guild of American included the entrance gates
and columns of Old Gray Cemetery as the subject of a cross stitch
chart that is part of the Guild's Landmark Series, April 2000. The
finished piece measures approximately 15" x 11". If you are
interested in purchasing directions and a counted cross stitch chart
for the gates at Old Gray (based on the drawing shown below) please
send $8.00 payable to Old Gray Cemetery (this will include
postage and handling).
