A Resident's Perspective

by Charles Thomas

My name is Charles Thomas. Over 12 years ago a friend told me about a house for sale in the Oakwood-Lincoln Park neighborhood he thought I would like. It had a front porch with a swing, a fireplace, big trees, and good garden space. The neighborhood had a pleasant, unpretentious, homey feel. I liked the location because it was fairly close to downtown where I work as an attorney. I could easily drive, ride the bus, or even bicycle to work or to some of my favorite spots in the city. As a nature lover, I liked being close to Sharp's Ridge with its forest and abundance of birds.

My neighbors are friendly, share things, and look out for each other. This adds to the atmosphere of comfort and safety I feel here. Neighborhood groceries are rare these days, but I have one, the Chicamauga Market, that's within easy walking distance. Other places to shop can be found nearby at the businesses on Broadway and Central Street, and I enjoy being close to events that happen downtown. Aesthetically, the neighborhood is particularly beautiful in the spring and fall, with many flowering plants and vibrant, changing colors.

I enjoy reading, gardening, many outdoor activities such as camping and hiking, and watching sports. I am a member of the Oakwood-Lincoln Park Neighborhood Association, and try to spend some of my spare time involving myself in neighborhood and community volunteer activities.
