Meetings

The Oak Ridge Kennel Club holds its regular meetings on the first Thursday of each month at 7:00 p.m. at the East Building of the Club property at
1790 Oak Ridge Turnpike, Oak Ridge, TN.

We are behind the former National Guard Armory building, adjacent to the Girls Club.
See map links and detailed instructions in the next section below.

Anyone interested in dogs is welcome to attend.  Bring a folding chair as the number of available chairs at the building is limited.
Well behaved dogs are also welcome!

Some of the meetings will focus on club business, while others will feature a speaker, demonstration, or other program of general interest to dog lovers.
Check the Woofer each month for details on the upcoming meeting, including possible changes or cancellations because of other events.
SEE YOU THERE!

The Oak Ridge Kennel Club has Training Classes in both obedience and conformation.

"Our aim is to help you train your dog to be an enjoyable companion and, if you so desire, to participate in competitions. Not all dogs have identical personalities and capabilities, and what works for one dog may not work for another. While we primarily focus on using positive training methods, we will also provide guidance in using safe and effective corrections as necessary. However, we are not equipped to deal with aggressive dogs or dogs with a history of biting. If an instructor determines that your dog can’t safely participate in a group training class, you will be excused from the course and ORKC will refund payment for the balance of the course sessions not taken."

Classes are held on the ORKC property. 1790 Oak Ridge Turnpike

COURSE DESCRIPTIONS

Puppy – This class is for puppies three months to no more than 20 weeks old on the first night of class. Puppies learn how to meet and interact with other dogs and people. They also learn a few simple commands and fun tricks. This is a four week class.

Prerequisites: Puppy’s age must fall within course description. Check with your vet to make sure your puppy is adequately protected against disease.

Super Puppy – Class is designed for puppies five months to eight months of age (depending on size). In this class, puppies will learn basic obedience skills, such as sit, down, and come, as well as basic manners and possibly more fun tricks.  This is a four week class.

Prerequisite: Puppy’s age must fall within course description or they must have recently completed the puppy class.

CONFORMATION

Beginner Conformation – This class is for those who are just getting started in the show ring. Handlers will learn how to groom and present their dogs, basic gaiting patterns, how to enter a dog show, basic ring protocol, AKC rules and “what to expect when you get there.” Instructors are experienced show handlers.

Prerequisites: Dog must be leash trained. Check with your vet to make sure your puppy is adequately protected against disease.

Conformation Handling/Drop-In – This class is for those who wish to show their dog in the conformation ring. Students learn more advanced ring techniques, get stacking tips, handling tips, ring protocol for both breed and group rings, and can socialize dogs for the show ring atmosphere. Instructors are experienced show handlers. This is a drop-in class, pay as you go.

Prerequisites: Student should be familiar with basic show ring protocol and how to present their breed of dog.

OBEDIENCE AND RALLY

Note: Completion of a course does not automatically mean you and your dog are ready for a higher level of work.  At the end of each course, the instructor will provide you with a personal recommendation for placement of your dog in the next session, depending on your goals and the general readiness of your dog.  If you don’t meet the prerequisites for a particular class, please discuss your personal training situation and dog with the Instructor before signing up for that class.

People signing up for training classes must expect to spend significant training time with their dog outside of class.

Course Descriptions, Prerequisites, and Graduation Criteria

Beginner Obedience – This course is for puppies over 6 months of age and adult dogs. (NO dog is too old to learn manners!) Features sit, down, stand, stay, come, polite leash walking, socialization and confidence building. Also taught are problem solving techniques and much, much more.  The first session of this class is without dogs, so the instructor can get to know everyone, what their goals are for the class and eventual goals for the dog, and can provide a basic orientation on the class structure, items to bring to class, and exercises to be learned.  This class teaches the basic skills you will need for higher-level classes.

Prerequisite: Dog must be at least 6 months of age.
Graduation Criteria:  Dog must be able to demonstrate knowledge of basic commands such as sit, stay, come, polite leash walking, and general good manners.  Some dogs, because of their own unique personalities, may need to repeat this course more than once.

Introduction to Open Obedience. This class is offered for dogs that have earned a CD Title or have achieved proficiency in Novice Exercises and can work reliably off-lead. Introduction of open exercises will be emphasized: beginning broad jump, high jump, dumb bell work, and drop on recall. We will begin brief periods of out-of-sight stays and improve heeling, fronts and finishes as done in the Novice Classes.

Advanced Open Obedience. This class is for dogs that know all of the open exercises and need to refine their skills for showing to a CDX or UDX title.

Canine Good Citizen (CGC) – This class is for those who would like to earn an AKC Canine Good Citizen (CGC) title on their dogs. It is also a good steppingstone to more advanced obedience, rally, and agility work and is an essential step for therapy dog training.  The CGC title can by earned by any dog, regardless of whether or not it is purebred or registered with the AKC. This class will teach handlers to train their dogs to pass the 10 individual CGC tests. The club will provide an opportunity for all handlers and their dogs to take the test at the end of the spring training season. Dogs learn good public manners, obedience to commands during distractions and acceptance of handling by someone they don't know.  This class is similar to Advanced Beginners and successful completion will prepare a dog to move into either the Novice Rally or Novice Obedience classes.

Prerequisites: Beginner course or equivalent. Dog must be over 6 months of age.
Graduation Criteria:  Dogs that are ready to move on to the more advanced classes will demonstrate this through successfully passing the CGC test.

Advanced Beginner Obedience – This class will help lay the foundation for competitive obedience and rally showing. Skills such as sit with attention, downs, fronts, finishes, stands and stays with distractions, and introductory heeling will be taught.  We will use some of the basic Novice Rally exercises in teaching these skills.  During one session, beginning jumping will be taught.

Prerequisite: Beginner course or equivalent.  Dog must be over 8 months of age and must know basic commands such as sit, stay, come, and polite leash walking.
Graduation Criteria:  Dogs should be able to stay mostly in heel position during an on-leash heeling exercise; generally sit at halts without commands; stay at the sit for at least 30 seconds with the handler 10’ or more away; stay at the down for at least one minute with the handler 10’ or more away; and should be able to stand on command and stay for at least 10 seconds with the handler at the end of the leash.  Dogs that are proficient in all but one or two of these exercises may also proceed to the next level.

Novice Rally – AKC Rally is a relatively new dog sport that is a stand-alone fun event for both dog and handler, as well as a successful transition activity into the world of obedience or agility competition. Rally offers both the dogs and handlers an experience that is loads of fun, fast paced and energizing. The canine/handler team moves at their own pace from station to station, performing a different on-leash exercise at each station. You'll learn all 31 Novice exercises, utilizing heelwork, fronts, and finishes, and also perform some rally courses.

Prerequisites:  Beginners, CGC or equivalent. Your dog must know basic commands such as sit, stay, come, and walk at heel on a loose lead.
Graduation Criteria:  Dogs must be able to satisfactorily complete essentially all novice exercises on leash before advancing to the Rally Advanced/Excellent course.

Rally Advanced/Excellent – This class is for dogs that have completed the Beginner/Novice Rally class or equivalent.  You'll learn the 20 Advanced/Excellent exercises, as well as continue work on the Rally Novice exercises. We'll introduce jumps, backing and longer stays.  For those interested in competing, we will work exercises in Novice, Advanced, and Excellent levels including entire course run-throughs.

Prerequisites: Novice Rally or instructor permission.
Graduation Criteria:  NA.  This course can be repeated as many times as desired.  Mastery of all these exercises will not only prepare the dog and handler for earning Rally degrees but will make the transition to competition level obedience much easier.

Beginner Novice Obedience -- Starting July 1, 2010, Beginner Novice will become an optional titling obedience class in AKC shows (BN).  This class is meant to provide a transition from the rally ring to the obedience ring, combining elements from Rally and Obedience.  Beginner Novice includes five exercises, all done on leash except for the recall: Heeling (using Rally signs), Figure 8 heeling; Sit for Exam; Sit Stay; and Recall.  There are no group exercises and you are permitted some limited verbal praise and encouragement.   Our training class will help you prepare for competition, or for further obedience training.

Prerequisites: Beginner course or equivalent.  Dog must be at least 6 months old, able to walk on a loose lead and know basic commands such as sit, stay, and come. You will need a six-foot leash for this class. You do not need to take this class before taking Novice Obedience, but it does offer a good course to transition into the more advanced class if desired.

Graduation Criteria:  This class can be repeated as many times as desired.  In order to go on to Novice classes, dogs should be able to perform the BN exercises acceptably.

Novice Obedience – This class will help prepare you and your dog for obedience competition at the Novice level, which leads to the Companion Dog title. People not seeking competition or a title will benefit from having a beautifully behaved and reliable dog you can be proud to have around in all situations.  All Novice exercises will be covered, as well as footwork, common dog and handler errors, and competition rules and regulations.  Exercises will include sit signal, sit from a down, greater precision in fronts, increased time on stays, stand for exam, down signal, recalls, and increased distractions.  Heeling with attention at different paces (fast, slow and normal) will be covered, figure eight patterns, and beginning off-leash heeling work.  Given enough time, additional exercises such as introductory Open exercises or Advanced rally exercises may be introduced.

Prerequisite: CGC, Advanced Beginners, or equivalent.
Graduation Criteria:  This class can be repeated as many times as desired, and for dogs planning to compete in Novice obedience competitions, multiple sessions will be beneficial.

Open Obedience – This class teaches the basic Open level Obedience exercises and helps the dog-handler team refine their performance in preparation for showing in the AKC Open Obedience class, which leads to the Companion Dog Excellent title. Exercises to be taught include dumbbell retrieves on the flat and over the high jump, recalls with distractions, random drops on command or signal with increasing distance, broad jump with front and finish, fine tuning of heeling with attention and refined footwork, ring protocols, and out of sight stays with increased length to 3 minute sits and 5 minute downs.  The instructor will attempt to work with each student at the student's level.  Handler must bring a dumbbell to class.

Prerequisites: Before progressing to the Open level, the dog must be able to work reliably off leash (not necessarily in perfect heeling position, but under good control) and should have reasonably reliable stays with the handler across the ring (one minute sitting and 3 minutes in the down position).
Graduation Criteria:  This class can be repeated as many times as desired, and for dogs planning to compete in Open obedience competitions, multiple sessions will be beneficial.  However, dogs need not be ready to perform in Open competition to start the Introduction to Utility class, as the exercises tie together well and will make training sessions more interesting for both you and your dog.

Introduction to Utility – This class is intended to introduce portions of the Utility exercises to the dog and handler. Skills introduced will include the moving stand, call to heel, signals, go outs, directed jumping and scent articles. Complete exercises will not be taught, only the skills necessary to begin the dog’s utility training.  Handler must bring utility articles and gloves to class.

Prerequisites:  Dogs should have earned the Companion Dog (CD) title or have the instructor’s permission. Dogs must be able to work reliably off lead and have a reliable retrieve command.

Utility – This class teaches the basic Utility level Obedience exercises and helps the dog-handler team refine their performance in preparation for showing in the AKC Utility Obedience class. The instructor is available to teach inexperienced exhibitors how to train the advanced exercises, but the more advanced students generally help each other and act as "stewards" and "judges" to give each other formal or informal run-throughs. Handler must bring utility articles and gloves to class.

Prerequisites: Dogs must have earned the Companion Dog (CD) title or have the instructor's permission. Dogs must be able to work reliably off lead and have a reliable retrieve command.

Attention – This is a specialty 4-week class that will concentrate on fun exercises to improve your dog’s attention to you.  Attention is vital for advanced level obedience competition.

Prerequisite: Puppy class or equivalent

Heeling – This is a specialty 4-week class that will concentrate on heeling exercises and patterns to improve your dog’s heeling skills both on and off-lead.  Heeling is vital for advanced level obedience competition.

Prerequisite: Beginners or equivalent.  Dog must be able to walk on a loose lead.

Clicker Introduction – a 4-week class that will introduce use of a clicker to motivate and train your dog.  This class is for handlers who are just beginning to train, who want to cross over to a clicker, or just want a fun class with your dog.  The basics of how to start your dog training using operant conditioning will be covered. How to shape a behavior and some problem solving will be discussed.  A fun class with no stress. Clickers will be available for purchase at the first class session.

Clicker Retrieves – a great way to introduce you dog to jumping and dumbbell work!  Fun and fast paced, and a good way to learn about clicker training as well.

                   OTHER CLASSES

Introduction to Agility (Four week class)  This class is designed for dogs with little or no exposure to agility obstacles.  Class will cover explanation of agility, safety and basic conditioning concerns, introduction to the obstacles, and practice with jumps,  tire jump, tunnel, chutes, and weave poles.  We will NOT cover A-frames, Teeter Totters, or Dog Walks in this class.  Dogs enrolled in this class should be at least one year old and should have completed a beginner obedience course or equivalent.   This is a "fun" class only and will not prepare your dog for competition.  Class is indoors.  No dog-aggressive dogs please, as dogs may spend some time off -leash.

Trick Training Class (8 weeks) - This class will focus on helping you teach your dog those fun tricks you've always wished he/she could perform. Tricks we may learn include: shake hands, high five, crawl, speak, roll over, play dead, say your prayers, sit-up, take a bow, ring the bell, etc. Clickers will be introduced as an optional training method. Dogs enrolling in this class should have completed a basic obedience class and know "sit" and "down".

Tracking Classes The Oak Ridge Kennel Club is the only organization in the area that offers classes in tracking.  We offer  tracking classes in the fall (in cooler weather) held on the campus of Roane State Community College in Harriman.  This 4-6 week class offers help to beginners in starting tracking.  We also can help trackers prepare for certification/tests, and offer a tracking test once a year in the winter.

Other classes may be offered by request – if you have ideas for classes you would like to take or teach, please contact the training committee.

A.K.C. Official Breed Clubs and Breeder Referral

Before you buy any breed of dog, however, you should learn as much as you can about that breed. You can, for example, fill out a simple questionaire at the following site to get a better idea about what kind of dog might be right for you. Click on: Select A Dog. You should also check out the Dog Information on the WWW Section of our homepage for Links to dog and breed information sites. Learn all that you can about a breed and/or dog before purchasing.
