ID Theft

The Meeting for Thursday, September 20, 2007, will present:

ID THEFT – BE AWARE AND PROTECT YOURSELF

By: Steve Peyrot
Vice President of ORPCUG

Identity theft occurs when someone uses your personally identifying information, like your name, Social Security number, or credit card number, without your permission, to commit fraud or other crimes.

Government statistics estimate that as many as 9 million Americans have their identities stolen each year. The crime takes many forms. Identity thieves may rent an apartment, obtain a credit card, or establish a telephone account in your name. You may not find out about the theft until you review your credit report or a credit card statement and notice charges you didn’t make—or until you’re contacted by a debt collector.

Identity theft is serious. While some identity theft victims can resolve their problems quickly, others spend hundreds of dollars and many days repairing damage to their good name and credit record. Some consumers victimized by identity theft may lose out on job opportunities, or be denied loans for education, housing or cars because of negative information on their credit reports. In rare cases, they may even be arrested for crimes they did not commit.

Join us on September 20, 2007 at 7:00 p.m. as we dive into the topic of ID THEFT . The location of the seminar will be at the New Life Church of the Nazarene, 200 Lafayette Drive, Oak Ridge, TN 37830. Be sure to invite friends to this special meeting!!

Be sure to bring paper, pens, pencils, etc…You WILL want to take notes

Remember that ORPCUG is a member group of the Association of PC User Groups (APCUG). This organization has its annual meeting in Las Vegas during the first week of January 2008. Members of ORPCUG can attend. Numerous vendors provide talks and discussion groups and meal during the event. Special room rates at the Riveria are available. Registration is $75, if you register before October 15.

The APCUG Meeting immediately proceeds the Consumer Electronics Show that is also held in Las Vegas, and registration for general admission for this event is free. Room rates are higher for this event.

If you are interested in attending, please check with John Sanders, who is our APCUG representative, or visit the APCUG site at http://www.apcug.org.

A short business meeting will include our usual Question and Answer session about other topics and problems. We are currently looking for a few good members to be the nominating committee for the officers for next year - or to be the nominees for officers for next year. Feel free to volunteer in either category; tell President Charles Kee.
