OBTAINING A HARD COPY OF SYSTEM INFORMATION

Have you ever wanted a hard copy of information about your system? It's easy to do. Open Control Panel and double-click the System icon. When the System Properties sheet appears, click the Device Manager tab, then click the Print... button to display the Print dialog box.

If you choose the System summary option, you'll receive a short report that tells you which system resources--such as IRQ, I/O port, memory and DMA channels--are being used by what hardware.

If you choose the All devices and system summary option, you'll receive a complete report that includes detailed information about each piece of hardware, plus information on what hardware is using what resources. And if you select a particular device in Device Manager, before you click Print... button, the Selected class or device option will also be available.

TIPWORLD'S TIP OF THE DAY

http://www.tipworld.com

This tip originally appeared on the TipWorld web site.

WHAT'S THE DIFFERENCE?

Why do you need to use the Start command to run a program from the command prompt when you can run any executable file from the command prompt by simply typing in its name? The difference is that you can run a program in a command prompt window by simply typing its name and pressing Enter. When you use the Start command, however, you run a program in a NEW command prompt window by entering "Start Program Name" and pressing Enter. For example, if you want to run a program named program.exe, you can simply type "program" at the command prompt and the program will run.

Try doing this with xcopy. Open the command prompt window and go to the root folder (type "md c:\test" and press Enter). Now type "xcopy c:\data c:\test." Press Enter and xcopy will run and copy c:\data to c:\test. Now let's use Start. Open a command prompt window and type "Start xcopy c:\data c:\test" and press Enter. This time, xcopy will run in a separate command prompt window, allowing you to continue using the original window to perform other work.

NT Shareware of the week

Second Copy 97 by Centered Systems

http://www.centered.com/download/setup97.exe

With Second Copy 97 the task of backing up important data in Windows 95, Windows NT and Windows 3.1 becomes automatic. Second Copy 97 organizes your copy jobs in profiles. Each profile is a set of file and folder specifications that tells Second Copy 97 what you want copied, where you want it copied and when you want it copied. Once configured, it runs in the background and monitors the source folders for changes or updates and copies new or changed files to the destination.

Setting profiles is a snap with the Profile Wizard. Express set-up lets you copy entire folders to another location on your disk, to another disk on your computer or to another computer across the network. You can define copy intervals from every half an hour to once a day. The Custom setup option lets you specify which files and folders should be included or excluded and whether you want the files copied, moved, compressed or synchronized. A neatly organized Log lets you monitor the copy activities.
