From EUREKA

Hello! My name is Olesya Kras'ko. I am fifteen years old. I study in the ninth grade of the Obninsk Free School. At the same time I attend the Youth - Cultural Centre "Eureka" to study journalism. "Eureka" is a wonderful place for young people to be taught and trained. If you want, you can study driving, or using video camera there, you can learn English language or design your own model of a plane. In "Eureka" you can see not only teenagers, but also many children, who learn to write and read there, play intellectual games and make nice handicraft works of paper and natural materials. I like being at "Eureka" and I have many friends there.
This March the Twelvth All - Russian Conference for Students "Youth, Science, Culture" took place in our Center. The Conference lasted for four days, but even during this short period of time I made many friends.
Many students from seventy two Russian cities arrived to Obninsk to take part in the Conference. On the first day teams from each city took part in the intellectual-creative game "Start", where students could get to know each other better and show their sports and intellectual abilities, their knowledge of Russian and English, Physics and Mathematics, Programming, Chemistry, Music and other sciences and arts. At the same day an exhibition (and a competition at the same time) "Golden Pencil" was opened. The students could see marvelous drawings and other works. Every evening the students talked and walked together, danced at the disco and exchanged addresses.
The Conference was my first experience in journalist activity: I took interviews and wrote an article for the first time. And it was for the first time in my life when I met so many bright people, who became my friends. One girl from Moscow taught me a fantastic dance "Drobushki".Everybody was satisfied with the Conference and wanted to return to Obninsk for the next time.
If you want to get more information about the Conference, I will name all the sections: Mathematics, Applied Programming, Systems Programming, Physics, Astronomy and Cosmonautics, Invention, Radio Construction, Chemistry, Biology and Medicine, Botany and Zoology, Field Ecology, Industrial Ecology, Geography, Study of Local Lore, Archeology, History, Science of Law, Economics and Management, Pedagogics and Psychology, Linguistics (Russian language), Linguistics (Foreign Languages), Arts Study, Literature, Journalism. Every section had its own room for meetings and a number of reports were presented by students in every section.

I think reports from the Linguistics (Foreign Languages) section could be of some interest for you. The themes were: D.Salinger's novel "The Catcher In The Rye " and the analysis of its translations, the translations of the sixty-six Shakespeare's sonnets, the analysis of "The Book of English Humour", the establishment of presidency in the USA, the peculiarities of the stylistic structures: (metrics, stophical and phonetic structure) in Walt Whitman's poem "O Captain! My Captain!",trends in American English, and others.
My questions to you are: 1. What clubs and groups do your students attend after school? 2. Do such conferences take place in your city? What problems do you discuss? 3. What do you think about the possibility of coming to Obninsk to take part in the next Conference (spring 1998)?
