About Obninsk

Obninsk is a town of 110,000 located 60 miles southwest of Moscow on the Protva river. Oak Ridge and Obninsk became sister cities in 1992. The first nuclear power station in Russia and the world was built in Obninsk in the 1950's. Like Oak Ridge, Obninsk has a rich scientific heritage. There are many scientific and other educational institutes in Obninsk. The Institute for Physics and Power Engineering, like Oak Ridge National Labs, is known world wide for it contributions to the nuclear industry.

Our sister city relationship continues to grow in many areas. Get to know our Russian friends. Learn about Russian culture and customs and the Russian language. Correspond with people with similar interests. Be an international citizen!
