Obninsk's 50th Anniversary Celebration

delegation’s trip to Obninsk, Russia.

Thanks to Mayor Shubin for inviting our delegation to help celebrate Obninsk's 50th Anniversary.

The delegation had an opportunity for discussion with a group of students at an ...

English Language School.  A JAZZ band from the school sang New Orleans
classics for our group.

The delegation visited a Veterans Club ...

... and Tom Row marveled at progress that
had been made at the building
since his visit in 2001.

Mayor Bradshaw was presented a loaf of "salt bread", a traditional Russian "welcome" gift.

We were treated to a fantastic dinner including traditional Russian fish soup. Gordei Gurov (middle back - blue jacket) attended ORHS for a semester and is currently finishing an advanced degree in business. 

The Obninsk Center for Children with Disabilities has been supported by Oak Ridge organizations in the past.
 


The 50th Anniversary Celebration included speeches by Mayor Shubin as well as representatives from from Kaluga Region and Moscow.

First rate local and regional entertainment followed the formal speech making to the delight of all attending.


Jim Campbell presented a letter from ORNL to the head of the Institute of Physics and Power Engineering in Obninsk.

included local crafts (the Veterans Club members made quilts that were gorgeous - see behind the local police officers) ...

Obninsk is proud of a Russian Orthodox Church being completed in the center of town.
