In the fall of 2000, Marti Fleischer proposed weaving a "Community Tapestry" to honor the 10th Anniversary of the Naka machi - Oak Ridge Sister City partnership. A "cutting off ceremony" was held September 27, 2001 to honor the
volunteers who helped complete the project with special thanks to Marti for her time and talents and Marianne Vigander for her original design used for the tapestry. The completed tapestry is currently on display at the Oak Ridge Public Library. Plans for an SCSO delegation to travel to Naka machi in early April 2002 are currently being formulated by Shigeko Uppuluri to present the tapestry to Naka machi. SCSO is pleased to announce that a second "Community Tapestry" is being woven to honor the 10th Anniversary of the Obninsk - Oak Ridge Sister City partnership! This project is possible through a generous contribution from Wanda and Pete Craven and continued support from Marti Fleischer who has provided a loom and her time and talents to get the volunteer weavers started. The design for the Obninsk tapestry comes from a mural on a building in Obninsk well know to many Oak Ridgers who have visited Obninsk. It represents the scientific heritage of both Oak Ridge and Obninsk which led to our sister city partnership in 1992. The weaving project is again located in the Oak Ridge library and we hope to complete the project during 2002 for presentation to Obninsk as part of our 10th Anniversary celebration as sister cities.
Watch our web site for details as progress on the Obninsk tapestry continues. SCSO thanks Marti Fleischer for her continued support for the Obninsk Community Tapestry and all the volunteer weavers! December 20, 2001 |
