October Newsletter

Dear Parents and Staff,          October 1, 2005

I want to start by thanking everyone for your participation in this fall's parent orientation. Attendence and energy were high. We apreciated the chance to show off our work with your children, and plan to hold parent/teacher meetings three times a year to review your children's progress.

This year's goal is to meet the needs of PCK through committees. Everyone signed up under 1) Interior Life, 2) Grounds and Maintenance, 3) Fire Equivalency, or 4) Fundraising. These committees are scheduled to meet during the first week in October to begin planning and carrying out their objectives for the year. If you are not on a committee please sign your name under on one of the Coop Hours Board as you walk in the building. Parents are asked to fulfill your coop hours through your committees this year. We have another busy month planned for October. The activities are described below.

Committee Meetings - The Interior Life and Grounds and Maintenance Committees will be meeting Monday, October 3rd from 5:15-6:00pm. The Fundraising Committee will meet Wednesday, October 5th from 5:15-6:00pm. Childcare will be provided. A tentative date list of objectives for each committee has been posted on the Coop Hours Board. These meetings will add to these lists and begin to create a plan for accomplishing the annual goals. Committee chairs should plan to report at the Board Meeting.

Board Meeting - The Board Meeting is scheduled for Monday, October 10th at 5:30pm. Childcare will be provided.

Pumpkin Patch Fieldtrip - This year's trip to the pumpkin patch will take place on Friday, October 7th. The kids will get to pick a pumpkin, ride a wagon, and drink apple cider. We are scheduled to arrive at 3pm and will need to leave school by 2pm. If you would like to volunteer to be a chaperone or driver please let your teacher know. All children under four must be accompanied by a parent. Over four may participate with a ratio of 2:1. The cost is $6 per child. All children will need to fill out a signed permission slip in order to participate.

Workshops - We have two free workshops for parents and teachers this month to be put on by Bonnie Sheely from the Family and Consumer Science Center at UT. The first is Money Management on Monday, October 17th from 5-6pm. The second is Lead Safety on Monday, October 24th from 5-6pm. Drop in and listen to the latest information on both and receive coop hours for participation.

Rummage Sale Part II - We discovered that Broadway is a less than optimal site for a rummage sale last month. We made $200, packed up the rest of the goods, and brought them over to Carol Foster's house to hold another one during the Catholic School's Fall Festival in her neighborhood. She lives at 1805 Howard Dr. (37918), right behind St. Joseph's School off of Cedar Lane. Please come and help out on Saturday the 15th of October. We need people to set up from 8:30-9:00am, collect money from 9-1, and clean up from 1:00-1:30pm.

We also raised over $100 from picture sales. We received 10% of all the proceeds. Between the pictures and the first rummage sale we hope to purchase a portable sink for the infant room in order to cut down on the floaters and save money in the long run.

Kroger Cards - Please help us raise money with a no-work fundraiser. Write a check to Carol Foster (our treasurer) for the amount of Kroger Cards you would like to purchase and put your check in the box on the parent table. Carol will put your cards in an envelop with your name on them in the box for pick-up. If every family participates we could earn about $500 each month!

Room Arrangements - We appreciate your patience while we have been out of our normal rooms. I'm not sure we even know what normal is at PCK anymore, but we will be returning the babies to their room and the two's to their room after a successful mold removal in the back closet. The work to prevent further mold will continue, but the enviromentalist informed us there were no health risks in returning to the infant room.

This is going to be a great year at PCK as we attempt to organize ourselves in new and improving ways. I thank all of you for your willingness to take being a part of a cooperative seriously. The "village" approach is the best wayto foster each of our children's growth and development. It's a lot more fun too!

Sincerely,

Alison Buehler
