Volunteers are needed to help with a small unique area in the heart of Oak Ridge. The Oak Ridge Cedar Barren will be the site of exotic invasive plant removal on Saturday, November 15, 2008.
Located next to Jefferson Middle School in Oak Ridge, this rare barren was saved from development in 1988 through efforts spearheaded by Tennessee Citizens for Wilderness Planning (TCWP), sponsor of this event, and was subsequently registered as a Tennessee Natural Area. Its maintenance is a joint project of the City of Oak Ridge, State Natural Areas Division, and TCWP.
One of a few cedar barrens in East Tennessee, the area is subject to invasion by Chinese and bushy lespedeza, leather leaf viburnum, Chinese privet, autumn olive, mimosa, Nepal grass, multiflora rose, and various other exotic and native woody plants that threaten the unique vegetation of the cedar barren.
Volunteers should arrive in the Jefferson Middle School parking lot at 9:00, with sturdy shoes, loppers, gloves, and water. Volunteers will be treated to a pizza lunch following the event (approximately 12 noon).
TCWP, a member of Community Shares, is an Oak Ridge-based environmental advocacy group with a keen interest in pure drinking water, clean air, and the Cumberland Plateau.
