Agenda for Special Meeting: Set proposed milestones for sustainability to submit to Council for August meeting and Recommendations to council and Planning Commission on waterfront development. Brief report from planning dept on their continuing interest in looking for green building codes and their progress in this area. Denny recently attended a conference and reported that there is now an active national to develop a National Green Building Code. This is not expected soon, but he did bring back a manual of standards that we can look at for direction. On Carbon Reduction goals: After long discussion the group, including the three members on the phone, agreed to the following: separate the city government goals from the community goals as we have much greater control over the actions of the city than of the community. City Goals: reduction of 10% by 2015; 50% by 2030; 80% by 2050 Community Goals: 5% by 2015; 30% by 2030; 70% by 2050 ( community thought to demonstrate lag of about 10 years over city government.) Motion to recommend these goals to the City Council made by Fred Stephens and second Robert Kennedy. Approved unanimously All three people hooked into meeting via phone hung up at this point. Discussion of recommendations on waterfront: At the last regular meeting liason from Planning Commission requested advice from EQAB on waterfront development and building of a covered marina in particular. The discussion listed a number of ways that the development could showcase the city commitment to green, environmentally friendly development. The members present also discussed a covered Marina/boat slip and decided to recommend to the full EQAB at the August 6, 2009 that we not support a powerboat/covered boatslip use of the waterfront. Committee will recommend the use of human powered water vehicles and electric vehicles only and that all non-electric power boats be banned except for those specifically used by the rowers in their activities. Pat Fain was requested to write a first draft of our recommendations for distribution to all members with full discussion and vote to take place at the next regular meeting.
