"Bioenergy Science Center at ORNL"
Brian H. Davison, Chief Scientist for Systems Biology and Biotechnology, ORNL
Abstract:
Funded by the Department of Energy's Office of Science, the DOE Bioenergy Science Center is
located on the ORNL campus in a new facility funded by the state and owned by the University
of Tennessee. The center will employ the interdisciplinary expertise of the team's partners in
biology, engineering and agricultural science and commercialization to develop processes for
converting plants including switchgrass and poplar trees into fuels. Dr. Davison will discuss the
center's mission, funding, organization and staffing, and scope of the center's research activities.

DIRECTIONS TO MEETING LOCATION
Our meeting location is the white-colored
building at 1201 Oak Ridge Turnpike (State Highway 95)
between Taco Bell and Applebee's
at the intersection of the Turnpike and
Rutgers Ave (at Traffic Light #7).
At the south-west corner of the white-colored building
there is an entrance with a canopy.
Caution - - there is an additional entrance with
a canopy close by - - the entrance we use is that
closest to the Jameson Inn. The glass door is identified as
"The University of Tennessee - University Outreach &
Continuing Education."
ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Brian H. Davison is the Chief Scientist for Systems Biology and Biotechnology at Oak
Ridge National Laboratory. He received his Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering from the California
Institute of Technology, and his B.S.E. in Chemical Engineering, from the University of
Rochester. He recently served two years as the Director of Life Sciences Division and was
previously a Distinguished Researcher & BioChemical Engineering Research Group leader. In
his twenty-one years at ORNL he has performed biotechnology research in variety of areas
including bioconversion of renewable resources (ethanol, organic acids, solvents), non-aqueous
biocatalysis, systems analysis of microbes (cultivation and proteomics), biofiltration of vocs,
mixed cultures, immobilization of microbes and enzymes, metal biosorption, and extractive
fermentations. He has published over 90 publications and holds six patents. He led a multilab
team which received an R&D100 Award for "Production of Chemicals from Biologically
Derived Succinic Acid," in 1997.
