Greetings, Friends. Please join us for another interesting and certainly
very salient and topical program:

April 15, 2009 Friends of ORNL Lunch/Lecture
"Reality: US Lands Can Produce The Ethanol To Displace One-Third Of US Petroleum Consumption"
Dr. Robert D. Perlack , Senior Research Scientist, Environmental Sciences Division ,ORNL

Abstract:
Dr. Perlack will discuss a recent estimate of "potential" biomass based on numerous assumptions
about current and future inventory, production capacity, and technology. The analysis was made
to determine if U.S. land resources could produce sufficient biomass sustainably to displace up to
one-third of the country's present petroleum consumption. For both agriculture and forestry, the
available resource was not restricted by costs - all biomass was potentially available even though
some of it would likely be too expensive to be actual used. Since publication of the "Billion-Ton
Vision," research has focused on updating the projections, determining the costs to access these
resources, and disaggregating supply estimates to counties and finer spatial scales. The update is
also focusing on near- mid-term time periods coincident with major bioenergy initiatives. This
presentation will summarize findings of this update for both cropland and forestland resources.

Wed. 15 April 2009: 11:00 am - 1:00 pm
