Subject: Scholarship reminder - Deadline June 30, 2004

Please remind any recent female high school graduate of this opportunity. I am pleased to say that two of the last three years, I have had a winner from Tennessee and would love to continue that tradition.
Representative Donna Rowland

Representative Rowland Encourages Young Women to Enter $2,500 Scholarship Contest

The National Foundation for Women Legislators and the Christian Science Monitor are co-sponsoring their seventh annual scholarship contest for college-bound female high school seniors, entitled "Youth Serving Youth." The contest's winners will receive a $2,500 college scholarship and travel expenses paid trip to NFWL's Annual Conference in September, where they will network with, be mentored by and speak to hundreds of women lawmakers from across the United States.

"This is an excellent opportunity for local members of the Class of 2004," said NFWL member, Representative Donna Rowland (R-Murfreesboro). "This contest will recognize the young woman who has made a significant contribution to the well-being of young people in her community."

"Since September 11th, today's teens, the millennial generation, have been called to a mission at an unexpectedly young age," said Rep. Rowland. "The current crisis and the War on Terrorism are causing all American leaders and citizens to struggle with new questions about responsibility and bravery. This contest is an opportunity not only to win a college scholarship, but an opportunity for young women let others know of the vital roles they are playing in their communities."

Completed applications must be postmarked by June 30, 2004, after which an NFWL selection committee will judge each entry - and determine the winner. The Award Committee will consider outstanding volunteer or paid service work that promotes the welfare of young people or demonstrates leadership in creating a new approach, program, strategy, or initiative that benefits them.

The National Foundation for Women Legislators (NFWL) enables women lawmakers to be more effective. NFWL provides women members of Congress and state legislators with strategic resources, including opportunities for networking, leadership skill development, and debates and briefings on the issues.

Questions by potential applicants may be directed to Rep. Rowland at 615-741-2804 or to the Scholarship Committee at the NFWL office, 202-293-3040 ext. 1006. E-mail: nfwl at womenlegislators.org. Website: www.womenlegislators.org.
