I'm writing to you with a special "sneak preview" of some of the
wonderful programs we'll be offering at this year's Southern Festival of
Books in Nashville. In light of the fact that many area schools will be
out for Fall Break the Friday of the Festival, we're going to offer a
special line-up of events to appeal to teachers, librarians and
students. All events are free and open to the public, but we would love
to hear from you if you (or any of your students) plan to attend!
On Friday, October 12th, we'll present the following -
noon-1:30 - Jack Gantos (I Am Not Joey Pigza),
Jeff Kinney (Diary of a Wimpy Kid) and
Jacques Couvillon (The Chicken Dance)
will talk about their books in a session titled "The Trials and
Tribulations of Middle School: Novels for Pre-Teens." Don't miss this
chance to hear Newbery, Printz and Sibert Honor winner Gantos interact
with two promising debut novelists.
2:00-3:00 - Rosemary Wells will talk about her Civil War-era novel (Red
Moon at Sharpsburg) in which a 12-year-old female protagonist dreams of
going to college. Throughout the course of the story she experiences
the Battle of Antietam and many more historical events first-hand. Of
course, Ms. Wells will talk a little about her beloved characters Max
and Ruby, as well!
3:30-4:30 - Editor Ann Angel and contributing authors Lauren Myracle
and Ellen Wittlinger will talk about the collection of short stories
titled Such A Pretty Face: Short Stories About Beauty. The
discussion-provoking collection asks young readers to think about what
is truly beautiful. Myracle and Wittlinger are among a highly acclaimed
group of contributing writers in the collection.
