Colleagues,
On Thursday, June 28, 2007 Governor Bredesen signed into law the appropriations bill that included $1million for Tennessee Electronic Library databases accessible to all citizens of Tennessee. The Tennessee State Library & Archives is convening the TEL Database Selection Committee to recommend priorities for databases that will be added to TEL's existing InfoTrac and Literature Resource Center resources currently supported by federal funds and library subscriptions.
Librarians across the state have been preparing for this glorious occasion! As Jeanne Sugg noted in a message this past Friday, many of you have studied database usage and effectiveness over the last few years, and this is your time to share that information with us. We want to know what you have learned from your surveys and from other studies that have affected your choices. Among such studies was a 2004 TENN-SHARE report (http://www.lib.utk.edu/colldev/telreportsept2004.pdf) on expanding TEL resources that included a lengthy list of subjects, formats, and approximate costs (at the time). We must now move quickly to take advantage of funding that begins on October 1.
The Committee will appreciate your recommendations of specific titles that should be high priorities for statewide access. Please send suggestions to me (llphillips at utk.edu) no later than Friday July 27. Committee members are Betty Jo Jarvis (Highland Rim Regional); Chuck Sherrill (Brentwood Public); David Clapp (Chattanooga Public); DeAnne Luck (TENN-SHARE); Jan Orick (St. Jude's Hospital, Memphis); Jane Pinkston (TSLA); Larry Romans (Vanderbilt University); Melissa Brenneman (Knox County Public); Ron Perry (Nashville Public); Scott Cohen (Jackson State Community College); Susan Whitworth (Nashville Public Schools); Tena Litherland (Webb School of Knoxville). Once the Committee has given a list of priorities to the TSLA, Pat Thompson and her colleagues will prepare RFPs (where necessary) and request cost information from vendors.
Thanks in advance for your help with the selection process.
Best wishes,
Linda and the TEL Database Selection Committee
