the TASL conference business meeting. If there are any corrections or
additions please let me know.
Thanks

Tennessee Association of School Librarians
Business Meeting
November 3, 2006
Chattanooga Convention Center
The annual business meeting of the Tennessee Association of School
Librarians convened at 11:00 a.m. on November 3, 2006, at the Chattanooga
Convention Center. President Brenda Moriarty began the meeting by
recognizing several individuals. Bruce Hester was thanked for his work in
serving as conference planner. Bruce¹s goal was to make the conference like
a ³mini national conference² and he succeeded in doing that. Bruce was
presented with a gift in appreciation of his service. The Conference
committee was then recognized. Finally, first-time conference attendees
were asked to stand and be recognized.
Next followed several announcements. Committees would be meeting from
4:30-5:00 p.m. on November 3. The Executive Board would meet 30 minutes
after the conclusion of the Awards Banquet that same evening. Attendees
were reminded to complete the Conference evaluation form, and to correct
speakers¹ names to read Walter Mayes and Janet Stevens. Brenda explained
the importance of filling out the TEA form; the forms are turned in to TEA
and as an affiliate, TASL receives $750 from TEA. Dues for 2007 to TASL may
be paid now. Those individuals who pay their 2007 dues before Mar. 1 will
be entered into a drawing for a complimentary conference registration fee
for the 2007 conference. The Used Book Sale is being held at the
registration desk. Funds from this sale go toward the TASL scholarship.
Donations to the scholarship fund are also being accepted. The Imagination
Library funding will be negatively affected by the upcoming postal increase.
We were asked to write letters in support of the Imagination Library by
November 13.
The Business meeting was called to order at 11:12 a.m. Carol Burr read the
minutes from the 2005 business meeting. A correction was made to read
³...Donna Jerden, a school librarian, was nominated for the position of vice
president of TEA.² A motion was made and seconded to approve the minutes as
corrected.
Lynn Caruthers gave the treasurer¹s report. Our beginning balance was
$51,793.21. Total income was reported at $42,786.85. Expenses to date were
$62,982.45. Our current balance is $31,597.61. It was pointed out that the
totals for expenses and current balance do not reflect outstanding
expenditures.
Ann Martin, member-at-large on the AASL board, was introduced. She brought
greetings from Cyndi Phillip, president of AASL, who passed along her
appreciation for TASL and the leadership shown by so many TASL members.
Emily Watson from TEA spoke briefly and named Judy Whitehall, manager of
Membership and Special Services, as being the liaison to TASL.
Nancy Dickinson and Bruce Hester recognized TASL members who were presenting
at the conference by calling their names and having them stand. They will
each receive a certificate. It was announced that for next year¹s
conference, TASL members whose proposals are accepted and who present at the
conference, will be given free conference registration. This incentive was
initiated in hopes of increasing the number of TASL members participating
as presenters.
This year¹s Executive Board and Conference committees were then recognized.
The slate of officers for 2007 was presented. They are:
Margaret Hausauer, President
Lynn Caruthers, Vice President/President Elect
André Crafford, Secretary
Carol Burr, Treasurer. Carol is completing the two-year
treasurer¹s term vacated by Lynn Caruthers.
The success of the Libraries and Literacy Forum was announced. This forum
was the first in the nation to be so implemented.
Brenda thanked TASL for the many opportunities she had received in her
tenure as an officer in TASL.
The meeting was then turned over to President-Elect Margaret Hausauer. She
enumerated a variety of topics that had been discussed recently on LM_NET.
Many of these topics are the same topics that we as TASL members deal with
on a daily basis, but through TASL, we have a support group to help us sort
out the pieces of our daily work life. Margaret announced the theme of next
year¹s conference will be ³Putting the Pieces Together @ Your Library.² In
working toward our goal of making life-long readers, she encouraged us to
³Help everyone by bringing your piece and putting the pieces together.²
The meeting was adjourned at 11:40 a.m.
Following the business meeting, Dr. Stephen Krashen gave the keynote
address.
Respectfully submitted,
Carol Burr, Secretary
