UT's Center for Children and Young Adult Literature is pleased to
present noted young adult author Kerry Madden on November 11, 2008, 7
p.m. at the Frank H. McClung Museum, 1327 Circle Park Dr. The event is
free and open to the public.

Madden's work focuses on a growing up in Appalachia in the 1960s. Her
works include Gentle's Holler, Louisiana's Song, Jesse's Mountain, which
tell the story of Livy Two Weem as she takes care of her blind little
sister, discovers her talent in painting, and experiences the challenges
and joys of growing up in Maggie Valley. Madden has also written a
semi-autobiographical novel, Offsides, which tells the story of growing
up the daughter of a high school football coach, and Writing Smarts: a
girl's guide to writing great

poetry, stories, school reports, and more!, a writing guide designed to
get young adults writing. Madden is currently working on a biography of
Harper Lee, author of To Kill a Mockingbird, for young adults.

ABOUT THE CENTER

Sponsored by the School of Information Sciences, the Center for
Children's

and Young Adult Literature works to promote the use of literature in the

education and lives of children and young adults by providing workshops
for

teachers and librarians, and sponsoring talks by authors and
illustrators

which are open to the public. Publishers of children's and young adult
books

agree to place review copies of their most recently published books in
the

Center, where they are displayed for eighteen months. These

books are available for study within the Center by librarians, students,

teachers and the public. The Center's new home will open in 2009 in time
for

its 10th anniversary.
