Pre-register your students to attend Sherman Alexie's event at the
Southern Festival of Books, and they will receive free copies of his
book as they arrive!

When: Saturday, October 11th, 9:00-10:30 a.m. (with signing to follow)

Where: War Memorial Auditorium in downtown Nashville

In his first book for young adults, The Absolutely True Diary of a
Part-Time Indian, bestselling author Sherman Alexie tells the story of
Junior, a budding cartoonist who leaves his school on the Spokane Indian
Reservation to attend an all-white high school. This heartbreaking,
funny, and beautifully written tale, coupled with poignant drawings that
reflect the character's art, is based on the author's own experiences
and chronicles the contemporary adolescence of one Native American boy
as he attempts to break away from the life he seems destined to live.

"We encourage teachers to offer extra credit or some other incentive to
their students for attending this event, because the opportunity to meet
Mr. Alexie is something that should not be overlooked. Mr. Alexie is the
preeminent Native American author, and his book is a bestseller among
young adult readers because teenagers of all nationalities and
backgrounds identify with his characters and with his story," said
Serenity Gerbman, Director of Literature and Language Programs for
Humanities Tennessee-presenter of the Southern Festival of Books: A
Celebration of the Written Word.

This offer is for Tennessee high school (grades 9-12) students and their
educators only. Those from public, private, and home schools are
encouraged to attend.
