AASL Standards Workshop July 21
“AASL Standards for the 21st Century Learner”

July 21, 2009

Hardin Valley Academy

Knoxville, TN

Judy Bivens, facilitator

9:00 a.m. -11:00 a.m.CST - review the standards and Standards for the 21st

Century Learner in Action

11:00 a.m. -12 noon - Lunch

12:00 p.m. - 2:00 p.m.  Write example lesson plans

As a former high school librarian and English teacher, Judy knows how important it is to plan instruction in Information Literacy based on curriculum standards.  In 2007, the American Association of School Librarians introduced the “Standards for the 21st Century Learner.”  These standards are very different from the previous information literacy standards which AASL had developed as part of Information Power.

In the 4 standards, students should be able to:

•         Inquire, think critically, and gain knowledge

•         Draw conclusions, make informed decisions, apply knowledge to new situations, and create new knowledge

•         Share knowledge and participate ethically and productively as members of our democratic society

•         Pursue personal and aesthetic growth

These standards seem much more qualitative than the previous ones and there has been much discussion about how to orchestrate their use.  At Mid Winter ALA, the Standards for the 21st Century Learner in Action was introduced.  This is the guide for using the new standards in information literacy lesson plans.

This session would be a time to work through this book as to how to utilize it in developing lesson plans.  The afternoon would provide some hands on opportunity to create and share lesson plan ideas.

You will need to purchase the book Standards for the 21st Century Learner in Action. Go to www.ala.org and click on bookstore to search for “Standards for 21st Century Learners.”

If you are interested in attending one of the workshops, please email Judy Bivens at jbivens at trevecca.edu
