My apologies for cross-posting, but I have the impression that many TASL
members may not be on the TLA list, and this is an interesting announcement.
Since I am just starting my own career, I'd be real interested to hear from
y'all about how you expect these kinds of improvements might actually look
in your libraries. My first thought is that if the funding can be used to
update networks and computer operating systems to par, this might be a good
opportunity to start moving some paper & pencil projects (like book reports)
into electronic formats (like blog or wiki entries), to integrate those
technology skills while cutting down on physical materials needed; however,
while I'm always looking for an excuse to push the techie toys, I'm not at
all sure that that in particular would truly make the "green facilities"
difference they're looking for.

Today, the House passed H.R 2187, the 21st Century Green High-Performing
Public School Facilities Act. The bill authorizes $6.4 billion for school
facilities projects, and ensures that school districts will quickly receive
funds for school modernization, renovation, and repairs. A school district
will receive funding according to the percentage of state dollars that the
district receives under Title I, Part A, and each district will receive at
least $5,000. To encourage energy efficiency and the use of renewable
resources in schools, the bill requires a percentage of funds be used for
school improvement projects that meet green building standards.
