Welch, Cindy Clevenger

Fri May 22 15:12:27 EDT 2009
Please excuse the cross-posting - and the fact that I'm the presenter!
The Center for Children's & Young Adult Literature and the Knoxville Public Library are co-sponsoring two workshops for school librarians, public librarians, and other interested folks (parents, caregivers, etc) on recommended titles for children and young adults. Everyone is welcome! Participants will hear stimulating booktalks (I promise), and will receive annotated handouts to take away. This is a great way to jump start your creative juices in preparation for a new school year, or a great way to decompress from a hectic public library summer reading program.
Date: July 31, 2009
Place: East Tennessee History Center, 601 S. Gay Street, Knoxville ($, public parking)
Cost: $25 for either session; $40 for both sessions; lunch is on your own
SESSION ONE
9:00 am - 12:00 Noon, Best of the Best for Young Adults, 2009
Focus on Gr 6-12 (YA) materials
Beyond the Newbery, Printz and Alex! There are many noteworthy titles teens will want to read, and this session aims to inspire you and your YA readers - in the classroom, in the public library, and at home. Dr. Cindy Welch, Assistant Professor and Coordinator of Youth Services at the University of Tennessee School of Information Sciences, will booktalk titles designed to challenge and excite teen readers, along with strategies for promoting reading year-round. I'll discuss titles published between Fall 2008 and Fall 2009.
SESSION TWO
1:30-4:30, Best of the Best for Children, 2009
Focus on K-6 (children's) materials.
You've seen the Newbery, the Caldecott, and Coretta Scott King winners, but what about other books children will love? Dr. Cindy Welch, Assistant Professor and Coordinator of Youth Services at the University of Tennessee School of Information Sciences will present noteworthy titles for classrooms and public library programs, along with suggestions on how to use them for programming, learning or pleasure. Books published between October 2008 and August/September 2009 will be highlighted.
Notes about the speaker
Dr. Welch has worked with and in libraries for more than 15 years. She has reviewed for several professional publications, among them "Public Libraries", "Bulletin for the Center for Children's Books", and "Booklist," and has created or helped create collections for both children and young adults in both school and public libraries. Prior to joining the faculty at UT's School of Information Sciences, she was the Deputy Director of the Young Adult Library Services Association (YALSA) at the American Library Association, and has consulted with libraries - both school and public - in many parts of the country. She is a YALSA Serving the Underserved (SUS) Trainer and spent a year on the YALSA Best Books for Young Adults Committee. While at ALA, she also served a brief stint as Deputy Director of the American Association of School Libraries (AASL).
