The Commission has a special and urgent request. We are trying to get the word out to Language Arts high school teachers statewide about Poetry Out Loud. Poetry Out Loud is a program from the Nat. Endowment for the Arts that our agency implements each year.  High students compete in poetry recitation contests. The winner at the state level receives $1000 cash prize and an all-expense paid trip to Washington DC for the national finals.  The TEACHER of the winning student also receives $1000 and a trip to DC.

Below is information about the program. Can you help us out by forwarding this to high school librarians across the state?

Thanks!
Ann

ANNOUNCEMENT:

The TN Arts Commission is seeking participation from TN high school teachers and students for the Poetry Out Loud National Recitation Contest 2010 .

Students who win at a school level qualify to participate in the state-wide contest in Nashville, TN which will occur on the last weekend in February or the first weekend in March 2010. The student winner and his/her teacher of the state-wide competition both receive $1,000 and a trip to Washington, DC to participate in the Poetry Out Loud National Recitation Contest! The national prize-winner receives $20,000.

As part of your involvement at the school-wide level this year, you will have the opportunity to collaborate with a professional poet who will work with teachers and/or students in contest preparation, curriculum, and poetry performance in your region.

If you are interested in providing your students the experience to learn great poetry through memorization and recitation that is aligned with the NCTE Language Arts Standards, please confirm with Ann Talbott Brown , Arts Education Special Projects Coordinator by email ( ann.talbott at tn.gov ) or phone (615.532.5939). Teacher materials including anthologies, posters, CD's, and teacher guides will be mailed to you.

I look forward to hearing from you and seeing the work of your students!

Regards,

Ann
