ETLA and non-ETLA members are all very welcome to attend.

Theresa Pepin worked with State of Tennessee to submit a three-part
Broadband Technology Opportunities Program (BTOP) grant application. If
funded, the grant would provide broadband access to unserved and
under-served counties in the state. The grant creates public
library-based mobile laptop laboratories or the equivalent in each
county. Finally, the grant aims to educate the public on the need for
broadband and what broadband can do for the state.

Pepin will discuss building the case for needs and sustainability (based
not on "business as usual" in recurring public funding but on newer
models responsive to deficit-busting); leveraging partnerships; and
relating to community. She'll explain what this means for public
libraries that wish to pursue competitive grants such as the BTOP.

Dr. Bharat Mehra and his colleagues received an Institute of Museum and
Library Services grant to provide full scholarships for 16 library
workers in rural Appalachia to earn a master's degree in the University
of Tennessee's School of Information Sciences program. The degree
program focuses on information technology and rural librarianship and
will be delivered via distance education.
