For those of us planning to take I-40 to Charlotte next week, we need to
find an alternate route. For the details--

(ASHEVILLE) -- It may take months before I-40 in Haywood County is opened
back up. Highway Patrol Trooper Gene Williamson said officials are trying to
determine the best way to safely clear a rock slide that happened at mile
marker three early Sunday morning. The rock slide has the I-40 closed in
both directions.
"Very uncommon for this area; however, we have had several the last 10 or 12
years. We've had two or three of this magnitude, so they're not very common
but they do happen in this area of the gorge," said State Highway Patrol
Trooper Gene Williamson.
I-40 is closed westbound at Exit 20. To get to Knoxville, travelers must go
East to I-26 west toward Johnson City to I-81 South to Knoxville. Eastbound
travelers can get on 40 east of mile marker three, but the road is closed
eastbound across the Tennessee line at Exit 4-35. The Department of
Transportation is recommending a 140 mile detour.
