One Light at a Time
The City of Knoxville Public Service Department has for the second year
made a commitment to do our part to save energy and help fight global
warming. With your help, we can do even more. Be part of our team and
pledge
http://www.energystar.gov/index.cfm?fuseaction=cal.pledgeForm&cpd_id=1614&campaign_year=2007
to make your next light bulb or fixture one that's earned the
government's ENERGY STAR* label for excellence in energy efficiency. The
pledge is a simple but vital method of encouraging more people like you
to commit to preventing greenhouse gases and saving energy resources,
one light - one energy-saving step - at a time.

Knoxville's Help Us Change the World, One Light at a Time is at 39 % of
goal and on track for it's completion date of April 22, 2008!  Please
make your pledge if you haven't already done so.

Our goal is to get 100 people to pledge to change at least one light at
home. Last year we surpassed our goal of 100 with 130 pledges.  Just
think, by reaching this year's goal we will be making a significant
impact on our environment, potentially preventing approximately 7,900
lb. of greenhouse gas emissions and 5,147 kWh equivalency savings of
energy.

Every ENERGY STAR qualified light bulb uses 75% less energy than a
standard bulb, lasts up 10 times longer and can save about $30 or more
in energy costs - while preventing more than 400 pounds of greenhouse
gas emissions over its lifetime.

Take the ENERGY STAR Change a Light Pledge today
http://www.energystar.gov/index.cfm?fuseaction=cal.pledgeForm&cpd_id=1614&campaign_year=2007
and help us reach our goal! It's a small step that's already making a
big difference.

Residents of Knoxville and Knox County can recycle your old bulbs at
the Household Hazardous Waste Collection Center at

Thank you for your support!

Eat Ben and Jerry’s Ice Cream for Community Shares
Every 1st Tuesday of the month from 5-8pm, 20% of all sales goes to Community Shares, a organization that works for funding local organizations, such as the Knoxville Recycling Coalition. Ben and Jerry’s is located in Western Plaza right next to Fresh Market. So pick-up some grocies and enjoy a delicious ice cream or Green Mountain coffee or a smoothy. If you haven’t had Ben and Jerry’s…it might just be the best ice cream out there. The next date is 11/6, then 12/4, 1/1, 2/5…..

If You Recycle You May Also Want to Buy Green Power
Buying two blocks of green power for a year is the environmental equivalent of recycling 15,322 aluminum cans. Two blocks is 300 kilowatt-hours, which only costs $8 a month. The green power that you pay for is added to the overall mix of power that TVA provides to the valley. The more green power purchased by customers, the more it off sets the use of coal over time. TVA’s Green Power Switch renewable energy supply is 78% wind, 21.5% methane, and .5% solar. To sign-up or learn more visit http://www.greenpowerswitch.com/

Knox County Convenience Centers and Knoxville Recycling Centers are now accepting plastics #1-7. Stryofoam is not accepted because it can only be recycled in large quantities but even that depends on the market. It is best to avoid using styrofoam. The signs on the bins may still say #1 and #2 only because they have not been updated, please ignore.
