Diversion Rates for Select TN Counties
What is a diversion rate?
According to the EPA, a diversion rate is the percentage of waste
materials diverted from traditional disposal methods such as landfilling
or incineration and instead are recycled, composted, or reused.
What does the State of Tennessee’s
diversion rate include?
Every year, each county in Tennessee is responsible for
collecting the data about the recycling, composting, and reusing that
takes place in their respective county and reporting this information to
the state. It is interesting
to note that the State of Tennessee’s diversion rate also includes all
materials sent to Class III/IV landfills, also known as construction and
demolition landfills.
What does the chart below describe?
The chart below compares Knox County’s diversion rate with other counties
in our state from 2005. The
information for this graph is from the State of Tennessee.
