2005 Diversion Rates for Select TN Counties

What is a diversion rate? 

According to the EPA, a diversion rate is the percentage of waste materials diverted from traditional disposal methods such as landfilling or incineration and instead are recycled, composted, or reused. 

What does the State of Tennessee’s diversion rate include?

Every year, each county in Tennessee is responsible for collecting the data about the recycling, composting, and reusing that takes place in their respective county and reporting this information to the state.  It is interesting to note that the State of Tennessee’s diversion rate also includes all materials sent to Class III/IV landfills, also known as construction and demolition landfills. 

What does the chart below describe?

The chart below compares Knox County’s diversion rate with other counties in our state from 2005.  The information for this graph is from the State of Tennessee.
