Mayfest 2000
by Kathy Miller
Once again the Oak Ridge/Anderson County RID participated in the city of Oak Ridge Mayfest this past summer. Despite a little unexpected rain there was good participation from the local RID board members. Newly elected RID Vice-President Grover Smithwick manned the booth Saturday, assisted by Mark Scarbrough and Kathy Miller.
Corporate sponsors provided gifts for the free drawings held on each day. Applebee’s Restaurant donated dinner for two and the new Jameson Inn donated a weekend guest package for two for the first drawing. Bill McWhorter, Oak Ridge, was the winner of that drawing. Sue Greer, Oak Ridge, won the second drawing, and her prize consisted of a weekender package for two at the Garden Plaza Hotel, including Sunday brunch at Burchfield’s Restaurant. Numerous people stopped by the booth to sign up for these drawings. Many of them stayed to talk about RID and its goals. A substantial amount of RID literature was handed out to help raise awareness about the hazards of drunk driving and its devastating effects.
The Oak Ridge High School Students Against Destructive Decisions (SADD) booth was adjacent to the RID booth, and their added enthusiasm, as well as, their willing hands helped fill lots of festive blue balloons and attach them to the wrists of many eager, young Mayfest attendees.
Participation was improved for this year above Mayfest 1999, and we look forward to spring and even greater things for Mayfest 2001.
