The Oak Ridge Mall was host to a community wide Bazaar, Saturday December 8, 2001 from about 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Area Civic Organizations displayed their literature at tables in the Mall halls. RID was represented by J. C. Scarbrough and Mark Scarbrough. There was a considerable amount of traffice in the Mall and RID literature, Newsletters, emery boards, and RID related information, was handed out. J. C. Second Annual Adam Downen Race for Responsibility 5K

The 2002 Adam Downen Race went off without a hitch. There were over 500 participants and scores of volunteers. A live band performed before the race and another band afterwards. Bi-Lo Markets furnished fresh fuit, bananas, oranges, etc., and Mountain Dew/Pepsi gave out all the beverages. Buddy's Bar-B-Q had fresh sandwiches for everyone and dinner on the ground in Circle Park was wonderful. The weather was perfect.

Remove Intoxicated Drivers (RID) of Oak Ridge/Anderson County had its banner right in the center of the action displaying the spring theme "Play Safe This Summer!" and "Boaters are Drivers Too!"

Two RID board members ran in the race. Wendy Williams placed first in her women's age division. Mark Scarbrough also placed first in his age group. Both received first place medals and ribbons for their performance. In short, Oak Ridge/Anderson County RID was well represented.

Adam Downen was tragically killed when the vehicle he was riding in crashed into a utility pole less than a mile from his home on May 21, 2000. He was 18 years old and had graduated the night before with honors from a Knoxville-area high school. Read RID's article on Adam's death here.
