Mayfest 2001
RID of Anderson County/Oak Ridge was again represented at the annual city celebration of Mayfest, held this year at the Civic Center. The weather cooperated, and the turnout was excellent — an estimated 500-600 people stopped by the RID booth to talk, pick up RID literature, and sign up for the drawings.
Mark Scarbrough manned the booth both days, aided by Wendy Williams and Darryl Simms. They were impressed by the enthusiasm and eagerness to become involved by such groups as the Clinton and Oak Ridge SADD (Students Against Destructive Decisions). Oak Ridge Police Officer Jerry Taylor, who works with the DARE program at Oak Ridge High School, was especially interested in RID’s efforts to raise public awareness about drunk driving and its tragic consequences.
Balloons were handed out to kids, as adults asked questions and signed up for the prizes donated by local corporate sponsors. Friday’s winner was Mona Grubb of Oak Ridge, who won a free weekend at the Jamison Inn. The Saturday drawing, a free weekend at the Garden Plaza, went to Barbara Winters, also of Oak Ridge.
This kind of public exposure is a valuable resource for RID, for it never fails to gain community interest and support for its goals and the civic programs such as Dial-A-Ride and Court Watch that RID sponsors. Many thanks to all who helped with Mayfest, especially Mark Scarbrough. It was a great success!
