Mission
NAMI Tennessee is dedicated to the eradication of mental illnesses and
to the improvement of the quality of life of those whose lives are affected by these diseases. We will accomplish our mission as follows:
- Help concerned families start self-help, support, advocacy groups.
- Improve quality of life for persons with long-term mental illness.
- Educate the public to dispel the myths and overcome stigmas associated with mental illness, and build support and understanding for the mentally ill to open opportunities for them in the community.
- Advocate for the interests of the mentally ill at the state and national levels, including advocacy for enlightened laws and adequate funds.
- Cooperate with providers of services to the mentally ill and encourage professionals to work with families as allies.
- Promote a range of support services in the community—including appropriate housing, income maintenance, low-stress employment and training, social networks, medical and rehabilitation services, assertive case management and effective coordination of these services.
- Support improved hospital and treatment facilities as part of the same range of services.
- Promote research into physiological, neurological, biochemical and genetic aspects of chronic mental illness that could point to causes, treatment and prevention.
