Rationale:
The props needed to develop fantasies and a place to act
them out are the priceless privileges of childhood. Much of the cultivation of
make-believe revolves around the classic spot known as the "housekeepong
center." It provides for almost limitless activities of a highly creative
nature.
Skills Developed in the Housekeeping Center:
- Ability to interpret facial expressions, gestures, posture, and tone of
voice.
- Ability to convey ideas through pantomine.
- Ability to role play unfinished stories.
- Ability to express ideas verbally.
- Ability to act out varied emotions.
- Development of sensitivity to others.
Equipment and
Materials:
- House furnishings(stove, sink, table, chairs, doll bed, etc.)
- Unbreakable, washable dolls
- Easily managed doll clothing
- Doll carriages
- Ironing boards
- Toy telephones
- Clocks
- Cooking utensils
- Table service(dishes and silverware)
- Cleaning equipment(broom, dust pan, mop, etc.)
- Empty food cartons
- Plastic fruit and vegetables
- Dress-up clothing(hats, purses, dresses, shoes, etc.)
- Workmen's hats(fireman, painter, chef, postman, etc.)
- Full-length unbreakable mirror
Implementation Procedures:
- Provide permanent fixtures for housekeeping center.
- Add materials to the center as special interests are expressed by
children.
- Design center to allow for free movement.
- Provide floor protection when activities include use of water.
- Limit number of children in the center as dictated by activities.
- Teach children to put materials away correctly so center is left in good
order after use.
