Open Hearts. Open Minds. Open Doors.

Welcome to Second Church

Just a mile from both downtown Knoxville and the University of Tennessee, Second United Methodist Church has the distinction of being one of the most visible churches in East Tennessee.

Interstate 40 adjoins the church property and every day more than 120,000 vehicles pass Second Church — often referred to as “the red cross church.” (Years ago, there was a large red cross on the slate roof of the sanctuary. More recently, the red crosses in the steeple shine for all to see).

Our focus is to help people become disciples of Jesus Christ and to equip them to share God’s love and grace. In the Book of John, verse 16 of chapter 3, we are told, “For God so loved . . . whosoever . . . ” — that is why we are here — to share God’s love with “whosoever."

Sunday School begins at 9:30 a.m. followed by our worship service at 10:45.

But, throughout the week, our parking lot bears witness to a multiplicity of activities, which are a part of our church life. We have four young adult Sunday school classes, four adult classes, and several classes for children and youth. Usually, more than 200 people gather on Sunday morning for worship. We have more than 30 in our sanctuary choir and six Disciple Bible Study groups.

Wednesday evenings feature a family dinner and programs for all ages.

Several groups meet weekly for basketball in our gymnasium, in addition to programs and activities for youth and children. For the musically inclined, we have handbell and dulcimer groups — with new groups starting regularly. Each month, our JOY (Just Older Youth) Club enjoys meetings and trips to area attractions.

If you are looking for a church home — or just a place to get involved — may we invite you to Second United Methodist Church — a loving, caring body of believers — small enough to know you, large enough to serve you.

The distinctive red crosses in its spire serve as a reminder of Christ's death, burial, and Resurrection to thousands who pass by every day. The most visible church in Knoxville, Second is located at 1524 Western Avenue, and is easily accessible from I-40/75 or from I-275 South.
