Background Information - A Critical Component for Comprehension
Background information may not be the same as prior knowledge, if students don't know what they need to know before reading. However, if students can decode adequately and they have some useful reading strategies at their disposal, is background information really necessary for comprehension? Can't students figure out what they need to know as they read, so valuable teaching time isn't consumed by providing background information? Find out why background information is crucial to comprehension, especially in content-area reading! For Grade Levels K-8.
