Dear Educator,
Welcome back to the 2005-2006 school year and to your Smoky Mountain Reading Council! Once again your local council will be providing educators with opportunities for professional development in the field of reading and language arts. SMRC is a local reading organization that is affiliated with the state reading organization, Tennesse Reading Association (TRA) and the International Reading Association (IRA). Consider joining us and please share this information with your colleagues.
Our local council has 3 general programs during the year. It also sponsors projects such as Love of Reading with local personalities reading their favorite stories; Read To Me which encourages reading by handing out books and bookmarks to area hospitals; and Celebrate Literacy which is a book-writing opportunity for students. Members will receive the Tennessee Reading Association's publication.
Join or renew your membership today! Annual dues are $15 ($10 for interns). This will give you local and state membership, free admission to our programs, reduced TRA conference registration and TRA publications.
To become a member, please print out the membership form, make out a check to SMRC for $15 ($10 for interns) and bring it to the first meeting on October 6 at Hardin Valley. You may also send it by Knox County school mail to Myra Haynes, Norwood Elementary School, Route 50, or to Jo Ann Guidry, 3552 Navigator Point, Knoxville, 37922.
The school with the highest % of certified staff joining SMC by October 31st will find themselves in the spotlight and will win $100 for their school library!
Non-members will pay $5 a meeting and will not receive the Tennessee Reading Association's publications.
