TASL Advocacy Tip of the Month
Summer Advocacy Tip

As the school year closes this year, spend the summer reading, relaxing, and then revving up again for the new year. In the January/February 2008 edition of Knowledge Quest, AASL President Sara Kelly Johns argues the case for making your parents your most powerful allies.
In the article http://www.ala.org/ala/aasl/aaslpubsandjournals/kqweb/kqarchives/volume36/36 3/363main.cfm), she tells the story of the "Spokane Moms" who recently made national news while trying to save school librarian positions in their local school systems. Her point is, if your program makes a difference to kids, their parents will support it. The AASL's grassroot organization, the Affiliate Assembly, asked the organization for resources for parents to act as advocates for school libraries, and to meet that need, AASL created the Parent Outreach Task Force, which will be developing action plans for collaborating with parent groups. Parents as partners? Spend some time in the car-rider's line recruiting - you may get way more than you bargained for!
