Monday, May 14th, Town Hall Meeting

Fountain City Town Hall invites everyone to its May membership meeting.  Our guest speaker will be Mark Donaldson, Director of the Metropolitan Planning Commission who will discuss the new R-1EN zoning classification.  This zoning is intended to protect and preserve established, older low-density neighborhoods with large lawns and intricately designed residences.  It established more limitations on the subdivision of lots, structure setbacks, and infill housing design compared to R-1 and R-1A zoning classifications prevalent in Fountain City and other older areas of Knoxville.  The meeting will also include a brief update on the status of the proposed Fountain City Skate Park and a membership vote on modifications to the Town Hall by-laws.  The meeting is Monday, May 14, 2007: 7:00 - 8:30 p.m., at the Church of the Good Shepherd, 5337 Jacksboro Pike.

Press Release – March 2, 2007

Neighborhood Meeting to Discuss Proposed Skateboard Park on Maple Dr.

Fountain City Town Hall has arranged a meeting with residents and property owners located near the east end of Maple Dr. at Knox Rd. to discuss a proposed skate park in that area.  The neighborhood meeting will be on Thursday, March 8, 2007, at Grace Community Church, 2001 Highland Dr. at 6:30 p.m.  The purpose of the meeting is to identify and discuss potential neighborhood concerns with the proposed skate (board) park.

The idea for a skate park in Fountain City came from discussions at the November 2006 Town Hall general membership meeting.  Subsequently, in January 2007 Town Hall held a community meeting to discuss the need for a park and potential issues.  Skateboarding has become a mainstream sport in the United States and around the world, just like soccer, baseball and basketball.  However, there is no safe, public facility available for area skaters to develop their skills; and Fountain City parents are driving their children hundreds of miles a year to the many skateboard parks that have been built in our region.

As a result of the January community meeting, a task force was created to evaluate sites to construct a local skate park and work with the Knoxville Parks and Recreation Department on implementation.  The task force identified a site on Knox Rd. at Maple Dr. (next to the bait shop) as the preferred site.  However, after City Engineering conducted surveys, it was determined that this site was not feasible because of floodway restrictions.  However, much of the land on the west side of First Creek off Maple Dr. is out of the floodway and could be utilized for a skateboard park.  This has now become the preferred site.

Before the community and the City can proceed further, it is important to have input and address issues that the property owners and residents from Maple Dr. may have.  There will be representatives at the meeting from City Parks and Recreation, Engineering, and the Police Department.  Members of City Council have also been invited.

February 2007

Due to the enthusiasm demonstrated at the January meeting on the planned Fountain City Skatepark, the Town Hall meeting for February will be a follow-up meeting to discuss potential sites. The Skatepark Task Force, formed at the January meeting, will present their site evaluations to the general membership. The meeting begins at 7:00 p.m. Join us!

All Fountain City Town Hall meetings unless otherwise noted are held in the Parish Hall at the Church of the Good Shepherd, 5337 Jacksboro Pike.

Fountain City Town Hall invites everyone to its February membership meeting to hear the results from the Skate Park Task Force formed at its January meeting. The task force was charged with evaluating sites to construct a local park for area skateboarders and work with the City Parks and Recreation Department on implementation. The two primary sites being evaluated are city-owned property on Knox Rd. at Maple Dr. and at Gresham Middle School. The meeting is at 7:00 p.m. on February 12th in the parish hall of the Church of the Good Shepherd, 5337 Jacksboro Pike.
