A couple of years ago our club surveyed community needs. Out of
that came an expression by Lenoir City officials of a need for
home repair assistance to low-income residents who were also
incapable of performing repairs without assistance. That
expression of need was communicated to Lou Livengood, then
Community Services Committee Chair, and two members who became
project co-chairmen: Dave Miller and Jerry Denney.
Last June, the three agreed to tackle a house proposed by the city
code enforcement officer. The home belonged to a 74-year-old lady
who is low-income and also rather infirm. The house was built by
her ancestors and the lady has lived on this property all her
life.
PROJECT HOUSE -- BEFORE RESTORATION
The house had a roof leak, many of the windows were broken or the
glazing had crumbled away, much of the exterior trim had rotted,
and the house was in general disrepair. An example of the degree
of rot is shown below on a porch column, and is typical of window
sills, fascia, soffits, etc. Furthermore, since the house had
been built by 'amateurs', it had virtually no square or plumb
lines or lumber components of standard dimension!
