During an "inspirational moment" at a Community Golf
Outing fundraiser organized by the Tellico Village Kiwanis Club some
four years ago, club member Ruth Thornton composed new words
to the well-known Stephen Foster tune "Oh, Susannah."
Ever since, our club has enjoyed singing this song at the close of our
meetings, as it helps remind us who we are, what we do, and for whom
we're doing it.
It was sung at the Kentucky-Tennessee District Conference held
recently in Bowling Green, Kentucky and as a result numerous
requests have been received for the new lyrics composed by Ruth. In
response, here they are:
The Kiwanis Song
Music by Stephen Foster,
1847 Lyrics by Ruth Thornton,
2003
Sing to the tune of "Oh, Susannah"
We come together with concerns
for the children of the world;
We pray, salute and sing a song
and honor flags unfurled.
We add new members to our club,
so we can build and grow;
We serve our town in many ways,
which helps our hearts also.
(refrain)
(refrain)
"Do unto others as you'd
have done to you"!
Kiwanis is the best of clubs,
for men and women, too!
